Dr. Sylvan
Mintz graduated from the University of Maryland in 1963 with a Bachelor
of Arts (BA) Degree in History. In 1967, he was awarded a Degree in
Dentistry (DDS) from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.
Dr. Mintz continued his post-graduate education with a Master of
Science in Dentistry (MScD) in Pediatric Dentistry from Boston
University School of Graduate Dentistry in 1971, and was also awarded a
Certificate in Anesthesia from Kennedy Memorial Hospital that same
year. Dr. Mintz attended the University of New Jersey School of
Medicine and Dentistry and received Certificates in Temporomandibular
Joint Dysfunction (TMJ) and Orofacial Pain in 1990, 1992, and 2000. Dr.
Mintz was at one time a member of the following associations: American
Dental Association, American Society of Dentistry for Children,
American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Southern Maryland Dental
Society, Patuxent Dental Society, American Equilibration Society. He is
a Diplomate in the American Board of Orofacial Pain and the American
Board of Dental Sleep Medicine.
Dr. Mintz was active for over
twenty-five years on the staff of Children's Hospital National Medical
Center in Washington, DC, and the Prince George's Hospital Medical
Center. Dr. Mintz was a clinical instructor at the
Dental School at the University of Maryland Pain Center. He is currently a
regular consultant to the Orofacial Pain clinic at Bethesda Naval
Hospital.
Dr. Mintz grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. After dental school, he
served two years as a General Dentist in the Army, including one year
in Vietnam. During that time, Dr. Mintz organized and ran a clinic for
Vietnamese orphans and was awarded the Army Commendation medal.
In 1971, Dr. Mintz started a solo pediatric dental office in Oxon Hill,
Maryland. The practice expanded to a group dental office in 1974. A
second office was opened in 1975, in Waldorf, MD. By the time Dr. Mintz
sold his practice to a managed service organization in 1998, the
practice had grown to a multi-specialty group with twelve dentists and
a staff of nearly sixty. Wanting to be closer to home, and wanting to
devote the rest of his career to the specialization of TMJ dysfunction,
facial pain, and sleep medicine, he opened an office in Rockville in
2001, and then relocated to Bethesda in 2007.
Dr. Mintz and his wife have a son and a daughter who are both married. They are the proud grandparents of four. His hobbies include gardening, golf, horseback riding, antiquing, and travel.
